Speaking the Word

Main Text : Matthew 8:5-13 | By Pastor Simpson

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. A very popular verse indeed but with deep meaning. The Word is powerful because the Word is God. The Word which saw the foundation of the beginning can bring to life, and can also destroy. We don't know the power we possess as christians because we have the Word. It's unfortunate we don't use this power because we don't speak the word.

From the text, we can see the power of the Word at play when spoken. All the centurion needed for his young servant to be healed was just the Word because he believed in the Word - Such great faith! Jesus even told him to go that He was coming to his house but he pleaded with Jesus to just speak the Word. Jesus spoke the Word and his young servant was healed that same hour the Word was released.

As Christians, we are encouraged to study the word of God to be approved, and to be equipped. We need to study the word of God so we can deal with every situation we are faced with. There's a word for every situation that confront's us. God's spoken word cannot pass away (Mark 13:31). There's power in the word of God.

Are you passing through difficulties, hard times or you are feeling dejected and hopeless? Rejoice henceforth because i have good news for you, and that is - you have the word of God. Poverty, disease, dejectedness, sorrow etc have no choice but to respect he word of God. All you have to do is to speak it. Even Jesus, the Word, spoke the word. He that is God that came down taking the form of man spoke the word, how much more we, ordinary flesh and blood.

In Matthew chapter 4 Jesus was tempted by the devil just after He finished his 40 days fast and was very hungry and tired. Jesus used the word to overcome the devil in all the temptations.

Surprisingly, the devil also speaks the word. But when he does, his sole purpose is to use it to deceive you and I. In all the temptations, Satan tried to deceive Jesus by using the word. But Jesus, who is the Word Himself conquered satan by speaking the word. He used the word for the situation He found himself in and He overcame the devil, and the devil flee from Him seeing he was defeated.

To conclude, there's no situation you cannot speak the word of God in. There's no situation the word of God cannot address. The word you speak need to be activated. It is only when you have the word that you can speak it. Below are conditions to activate the word:

  • You must receive the word and also trust the word. In other words, you must be born again and you trust the word (John 3:3).
  • You must have faith in the word (Hebrews 6:12) just like the centurion did.
  • You must be a vessel unto honour (1st Timothy 2:21), not a dirty vessel. After you have used your body in committing all manner of sins you still expect the word to work for you? That's not possible.
  • You must have a forgiving spirit (Ephesians 4:32). You cannot pray to God with bitterness in your heart.
  • You must work your salvation with fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12).
